Growing Young Minds Through Nature and Gratitude

Rooted Gratitude seed kits, workshops and programmes invite students to explore nature through seed planting, creative botanical activities, and gratitude practices that support both learning and wellbeing. By nurturing plants, students also nurture patience, curiosity, and appreciation for the natural world.

The Science Behind Gardening and Gratitude

Research shows that interaction with nature and plants can positively influence student wellbeing and learning.

Studies have found that:

• Students who participate in school gardening programmes show increased engagement in science and environmental learning (Royal Horticultural Society School Gardening Research).

• Exposure to green spaces has been linked to improved concentration and cognitive performance in children (University of Illinois Environmental Neuroscience studies).

• Practicing gratitude has been associated with improved emotional wellbeing, optimism, and stronger social relationships among students (University of California Greater Good Science Center research).

When gardening and gratitude practices are combined, students experience opportunities to develop both environmental awareness and emotional resilience.

Why Rooted Gratitude for Schools

Rooted in Nature, Grow in Gratitude

Rooted Gratitude was created to help students reconnect with the natural world while developing positive emotional skills. Through simple gardening activities and gratitude reflections, students learn how care, patience, and attention can help living things grow.

Nature provides an engaging environment where students can observe science in action while also developing mindfulness and appreciation for the world around them.

Our programmes combine:

• hands-on gardening

• simple gratitude practices

• creativity and nature-based learning

The result is an experience that supports student wellbeing, environmental awareness, and curiosity about science and nature.

Curriculum Connections

Rooted Gratitude activities naturally support several areas of the UK curriculum while providing an engaging and memorable learning experience.

Science

Planting seeds and observing plant growth helps students explore key science concepts, including plant life cycles, the needs of living things, and environmental ecosystems.

Students learn about:

• how plants grow and reproduce

• the role of sunlight, water, and soil

• pollination and biodiversity

• sustainable gardening practices

These experiences support hands-on learning and observation, helping students better understand scientific concepts.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Gratitude practices and reflective activities help students develop emotional awareness and wellbeing.

Rooted Gratitude supports PSHE by encouraging:

• mindfulness and reflection

• emotional regulation and gratitude practices

• cooperation and teamwork

• appreciation for nature and community

These activities can help students feel calmer, more present, and more connected to their environment.

Environmental & Sustainability Education

Through gardening and plant care, students develop an understanding of environmental stewardship.

Students explore:

• caring for living things

• the importance of biodiversity

• how plants support ecosystems

• sustainable and eco-friendly practices

These lessons help students recognise their role in protecting and appreciating the natural world.

Example Lesson Structure

Rooted Gratitude workshops are designed to be easy for schools to implement and enjoyable for students. A typical session may include:

1. Introduction to Nature & Gratitude - Students begin with a short discussion about plants, growth, and the idea of gratitude. They are invited to reflect on what they appreciate in nature.

2. Seed Planting Activity - Students plant their seeds using Rooted Gratitude kits and learn about what plants need to grow. They write their name or message on their wooden plant marker.

3. Gratitude Reflection - Students reflect on what they are grateful for while their plant grows. Teachers may guide a short discussion about patience, care, and responsibility.

4. Ongoing Observation - Students care for their plants over the coming weeks and observe the stages of growth. This encourages curiosity and responsibility.

5. Creative Extension (Optional) - Activities such as flower pressing, botanical crafts, or nature journaling allow students to continue exploring nature creatively.
